Buying a Diamond
Buying a diamond could be a complex and frustrating
experience people undertake. This step by step guide will give you
insightful guidance to buying the perfect diamond for you or that special
loved one.It is without a doubt when we purchase something of great value,
example a car we want to know all about that vehicle before purchasing it.
We want to know about the model of the vehicle, if it's good on gas, what
safety features it offers, price, etc. Before buying a diamond you need to
have a projected budget. Visit a few jewelers and examine different diamonds
under a 10x power magnification, the jeweler should let you use their loupe.
We need to learn about the 4 Cs in order to understand how to evaluate a
good diamond from a poor diamond. After understanding these simple
principles we will then begin to discover how the diamond gets it's
brilliance. When visiting the jeweler try to have some idea of the kind of
style (shape) of diamond your fiancee admires before moving on to mounting
the diamond on the ring, the styles of rings, and of course the size of the
ring.
Educate Yourself knowledge is power
Find out as much as you can before making your purchase on a diamond. The
more educated you become, the better price, and higher grade diamond you
will receive. We have a few good places we can recommend you to read up on
information about the 4C's (Carat, Cut, Clarity, Color) and other useful
information based on diamonds.
When at the Jewelry Shop make sure to get the market value for the diamond
your interested in. Look at the quality of the diamonds the Jeweler is
quoting you on. Make sure to write this information down. We have a PDF file
"Diamond Ring CheckList" for you to print out. It will help you ask the
right questions, and make comparisons when shopping. Next, you want to find
out if the diamond is certified. If so, is it with a recognized Gem
Institution such as GIA, AGS, and not some unheard institution? Check out
Gem Institutions for a list of reputable Cert Institutes. Try to get the
information from the certificate if possible. After visiting a few Jewelers,
seeing similar diamonds displayed elsewhere evaluate the prices, find out if
the diamond comes with the certificate from the gem lab. Make sure when
comparing prices, they are based the same type of diamond on identical
properties of the 4C's. For example, minor differences in cut can have a
severe impact on the price and beauty of the diamond. The most important
point to remember is not to compare the price of a certified Diamond with a
price of a Diamond which is not certified, or is only certified by a no-name
brand Laboratory. Unless your in for a good shock.
At this point we should have an idea of what type of diamond we want to
purchase. Let's not rush into making this extravagant purchase without first
exhausting all our resources. Symmetry and proportions of a diamond are very
important. The better the symmetry the better the brilliance of the diamond.
I have prepared the "Editor's Letter" which outlines some very important
guidelines as to the ideal symmetry for the different types of diamonds
(also read Shapes) out in the market. This, along with other useful
information is outlined in the "Editor's Letter", make sure to read it, it's
a great read
